The main reason tile gets white scale deposits is due to Nevada's hard water. We have a large amount of calcium in our water. Just look at lake meade as the water level drops. The rock formations in and around the lake are white. As Lake Meade drops the hardness concentrations will probably the worsen. This might make it harder as the years roll on to keep our chemical balance proper on our swimming pools. Another reason pool tile gets calcium is improper chemical balance and the wrong chemicals used in the water. A lot of customer don't keep close attention to their ph level, with high ph levels you can get scale deposits on your tile and plaster. Another reason is cheap shock. Many people go to their local pool store and purchase bags of cheap shock,or better known as calcium hypochlorate. These type of shocks are full lof calcium. Another bad type of shock in my opinion is liquid chlorine. Liquid chlorine is full of salt. Another bad guy in your pool water. Now that you have a basic education of why your tile is turning white I will tell you how we go about cleaning your tile.

First, we lower your water level below the water line or completely drain the pool. Next we blast your tile with a glass bead process, glass bead is like sand, but doesn't etch or pitt the tile. Done properly glass beading leaves your tile looking new and shiny like the day the pool tile was new. Next we apply a clear glaze sealer. This seals the tile and protects the grout from future scale or salt deposits. I see a lot of tile cleaner techs not sealing the tile. This makes no sense to me. You are spending hundreds of dollars and hours of time to clean the tile, why would you not seal it? The sealer leaves a nice shiney finish and the job is complete. We then turn your auto fill back on and let the pool slowly fill back up. If any glass bead remains on the bottom of the pool, we have a portable vacuum system called Porta-Vac that will suck out the bead from the bottom and put in our own portable vacuum system. Doing the job right does take extra time and a few extra dollars, but when you see how beautiful your tile looks you will feel like it was time and money well spent.
